Marian Friary of Our Lady of Guadalupe
figuadalupe.comFirst Friday
In June of 2003 the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate of Our Lady of Guadalupe Friary were requested to be the spiritual directors and sponsors of a program for homeschooling families which would meet every First Friday of the month in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
This request was the inspiration which led to the founding of Catholic Home Educators of the Immaculate, a name which reflects the charism of the Franciscans of the Immaculate, and that it is all-inclusive for any Homeschooling family from any state who wishes to participate. The apostolate consists in bringing homeschooling families to the friary and letting Our Lady do Her work in bringing the children closer to Her Son, Jesus Christ. The First Friday also serves as a venue for Catholic homeschooling families to meet other families of like minded faith values while at the same time giving youths an opportunity to share the bonds of faith with other Catholic youths.
The First Friday program begins at 10:00 am, with the Sacrament of Confession made available for all the families. The Sacrifice of the Holy Mass is celebrated at 11:00 am. After reciting the Angelus at noon, all are invited to the friary hall where they eat their brown bag lunches. This is followed by a catechism class and quiz-game with prizes awarded to the winners.
After the class there are activities for the youths. For young children there is an arts and crafts activity which is linked to a special feastday or saint of the month. Older teens enjoy outdoor activities such as volleyball or basketball. Some youths prefer to play board games indoors. Parents are encouraged to participate with their children, which makes for a most pleasant day for all.
